THE MONTAGUE STREET BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID) IS A DESIGNATED COMMERCIAL AREA IN THE HEART OF BROOKLYN HEIGHTS. FUNDED BY A SPECIAL TAX PAID BY PROPERTY OWNERS WITHIN THE DISTRICT BOUNDARIES, THE MONTAGUE STREET BID PROVIDES SERVICES TO ENHANCE, IMPROVE AND KEEP THE NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN AND SAFE.

Serving more than 100 businesses, the District includes all properties on the north side of Montague Street between Court Street and Hicks Street. On the south side, the District runs from 200 Montague Street in the east to 78 Montague Street in the west.

We’re committed to making Montague Street a great place to live, work, shop and do business.

ADVOCACY

The BID regularly acts as an advocate when potential projects or policy impact the District’s merchants or property owners. BID representatives regularly attend workshops, testify at Community Board and other government hearings, and meet with city agency officials to voice the concerns and needs of the business community.

When merchants have specific concerns, the BID provides one-on-one assistance to resolve the issue or directs them to the appropriate organization or agency that can help.

The BID advocates for a well-maintained streetscape by monitoring the condition of Montague’s street furniture, roadbed, sidewalks, and signage. We report all elements that are damaged or in need of replacement to the appropriate City agency.

BEAUTIFICATION & LANDSCAPING PROGRAM

EVERYONE ENJOYS THE BID’S BEAUTIFICATION AND LANDSCAPING INITIATIVES ALONG MONTAGUE STREET YEAR-ROUND

LOOK DOWN
Notice the bursts of color hanging from the District’s tree pit guards? The BID’s landscaper, local business James Weir Floral plants and maintains these tree guard hanging baskets in our tree pits every Spring and Summer.

50 STREET TREES GROW ON MONTAGUE STREET IN BROOKLYN
50 trees on Montague Street add to the overall dense and healthy canopy of trees in Brooklyn Heights. The District’s arborist regularly prunes and amends the soil of these trees to ensure that they remain healthy and add to the health and beauty of the neighborhood.

LIGHT IT UP
In late Fall, the BID wraps the trees and light poles along Montague Street with more than 18 miles of festive holiday lights and fresh garland to help brighten chilly nights and extend the holiday spirit.

BANNERS
A series of banners hang high on the ‘bishop crook’ style street poles to create a unified identity for the District and add a sense of festivity to the street.

GREENEST BLOCK IN BROOKLYN WINNER
Montague Street between Henry and Hicks was named theGreenest Commercial Corridor in Brooklyn by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

CLEAN STREETS PROGRAM

OUR CLEAN NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNICATES VOLUMES ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY’S SENSE OF PRIDE, AND AFFECTS THE LEVEL OF SECURITY AND BEHAVIORS IN BROOKLYN HEIGHTS.

Our clean street ambassadors greet business owners and neighborhood residents with a warm smile and a helping hand 7 days a week and perform the following services:

CLEAN CURBS PROGRAM
The Montague Street BID is piloting the Clean Curbs Program with the Department of Sanitation and Department of Transportation. We are the first Brooklyn Business Improvement District to be a part of this program soon to be coming to all five boroughs.

The Montague Street BID’s sanitation crew, Block by Block, puts public trash from receptacles along Montague Street into the bins to keep the streets cleaner. The bins are built with bamboo, aluminum and durable materials. They’re locked, fully enclosed, non-flammable, and most importantly rodent-proof.

We hope that they help us to keep Montague Street cleaner and add to the quality of life for everyone in our neighborhood.

LITTER REMOVAL
Picking up debris, loose trash, cigarette butts, sediment and loose rock from sidewalks, alleys and street gutters.

WEED REMOVAL
Removing weeds from sidewalk cracks and building lines.

GRAFFITI REMOVAL
Cleaning graffiti immediately upon identification using the least invasive methods possible.

POWER WASHING
All sidewalks are washed on a schedule to maintain consistent levels of cleanliness, and spot washing is done to immediately address unsightly spills and stains.

SNOW REMOVAL
Clearing paths in areas that fall outside of the city’s and property owners’ responsibility.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
Painting light post, trash cans, tree pit guards and street furniture on a seasonal basis.
MARKETING & PROMOTION
THE MONTAGUE STREET BID PROMOTES SHOPPING, EATING, DRINKING AND EXPLORING THE SERVICES AVAILABLE ON MONTAGUE STREET.

We run marketing and publicity campaigns and host events to attract people to shop, dine and explore the local businesses along the 3-block stretch of Montague Street.

The BID also promotes and supports events, specials and promotions organized by our member businesses and our neighbors.

COMMUNICATIONS
Through a variety of communication outlets, the BID keeps its stakeholders and the greater community up-to-date on BID-sponsored events, resources available, and upcoming projects and breaking news that affects the community.

OPEN STREETS ON MONTAGUE
In partnership with the Brooklyn Heights Association and the NYC Department of Transportation, the BID converts Montague streets into car-free public spaces accessible to everyone. This initiative enables us to host various activities aimed at fostering economic growth, enhancing pedestrian and bike accessibility, and offering fresh avenues for community engagement through cultural events and family-friendly activities and entertainment. Come discover our shops, restaurants and more this season during Open Streets. The 2024 Open Streets season will take place on Sundays from May 12th to June 30th and from September 15th to October 27th. During these times, Montague Street, from Clinton to Henry and from Henry to Hicks, will be closed to car traffic between 10 am to 7pm, with no parking permitted.
SAFETY
THE MONTAGUE STREET BID WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE NEW YORK POLICE DEPARTMENT 84TH PRECINCT NEIGHBORHOOD COORDINATION OFFICERS (NCOS) — OUR LOCAL PROBLEM SOLVERS.

Our NCO’s, Officer Almand Kucevic and Officer Justin Mateo are committed to building mutual respect and stronger lines of communication between police officers and our community.  They actively engage with neighborhood residents and business people and become part of the fiber of the neighborhood to keep things safer.

As in all neighborhoods throughout the city, NCO’s host Build the Block safety meetings to jumpstart the dialogue between cops and community members to create real working relationships. The meetings have two simple goals: to identify the public safety challenges of your specific neighborhood – big or small – and give everyone an opportunity discuss potential solutions together.

Business owners and neighbors are invited to attend these meetings and join in on the conversation. To find out when our next meeting is, click here to visit the NYPD’s Build the Block website.
